Does Wallpaper Engine affect game performance?
Wallpaper Engine is designed for performance. It detects running games and maximized apps, then pauses your wallpaper automatically while you play. Even when active, a wallpaper has barely noticeable impact on a modern computer.
You can fine-tune this in the Performance tab of the app settings. Stopping wallpapers while a game runs unloads them from memory entirely, leaving only a small process that brings them back afterwards.
Do wallpapers cost money?
All wallpapers in Wallpaper Engine are free and there are no hidden costs. We use phrases like "subscribe to a wallpaper" because wallpapers are added through free Steam Workshop subscriptions.
Steam remembers your wallpaper subscriptions and downloads them again automatically when you reinstall Wallpaper Engine.
Is Steam required to run Wallpaper Engine?
No. Steam is needed only to download or upload wallpapers and install updates. Wallpaper Engine's core features work without Steam running in the background.
Can I install it on multiple computers?
Yes. Install it on as many computers as you like. Wallpaper Engine does not track installations or limit the number of devices. You can also copy the app folder to another computer and run it with local wallpaper backups instead of Steam.
